There is something for everybody in this film like most genre-mixing films. Suspense, charm, intrigue, action, and romance, plus questions of free will, fate, soul mates, success, and pre-defined destinies. David played by Matt Damon（マット・デイモン）has met Elise played by Emily Blunt（エミリー・ブラント）, and based on one spontaneous kiss and one flirtatious encounter, David determines that Elise is the one he's supposed to be with, then this intriguing story begins. I've been a big fan of Matt Damon for a long time, but hadn't seen him so passionate about a woman in films before. So, he is most charming, lovable, and moving here for me in a way.

The overall story line is about a couple who decided to use each other at first, and in the end, live happily ever after. It has a comedy to make us laugh and romance to cheer us up. Natalie Portman（ナタリー・ポートマン） shows her range of acting abilities by having two extremely different films at almost the same time. Her award-winning role in "Black Swan ブラックスワン" is totally different from the one in this light-hearted romantic comedy, but both are impressive. Ashton Kutcher（アシュトン・カッチャー） is also great at comedic acting and has a great face as always. If you are looking for a perfect date night or girls night movie, this would be a great choice.

Two Lovers トゥー・ラバーズ

It's a triumph for Joaquin Phoenix（ホアキン・フェニックス）, who provides a remarkable performance as Leonard Kraditor. Leonard is a damaged, emotionally unstable man with attempted suicides in his past. He knows his own sad history being dominated by a broken engagement but doesn't know who he is or what he wants. And there are the "two lovers" meaning Leonard's two women. One is Sandra, played by Vinessa Shaw（ヴィネッサ・ショウ）, who knows his problems and wants to take care of him. And the other is Michelle, played by Gwyneth Paltrow（グウィネス・パルトロー）, who knows them and takes advantage to make him a comforting pillow in her troubles with Ronald, her married layer boyfriend. We can enjoy the infatuations with various stages and maturity of love and also New York itself with its wonderful soundtrack.

Super 8

"Super 8" succeeds in combining the elements of J.J. Abrams（Ｊ・Ｊ・エイブラムス）and Steven Spielberg（スティーヴン・スピルバーグ） superbly. The trailer made me think it's like "E.T." plus "The Goonies（グーニーズ）" plus "Stand by Me（スタンド・バイ・ミー）". There is nothing new about "Super 8" but it brings us back to the good old times being a funny, exciting, amazing and intriguing monster movie. The story is basically about the children's zombie movie making and the family tragedy while there's a monster attacking their town yet the monster is also the subplot of this movie. The CGI is great, and the performances are really nice especially the kids giving lots of personality to their roles, and some scenes are breathtaking such as the train collision.

"Shrink" shows us how people search for better meaning in life and makes us think about our own lives. Kevin Spacey（ケヴィン・スペイシー）plays Henry Carter, a successful psychologist whose life is crying out for meaning. He seeks solace medicating himself with Marijuana being unable to deal with his wife's suicide. Keke Palmer（キキ・パーマー）plays Jemma, a high school student who is sent to Henry, and their nice chemistry beautifies the film. We can also enjoy oddly enough Robin Williams（ロビン・ウィリアムズ）as one of Henry's patients and will notice that everybody has got problems, everyone has got issues, and the stories of those around us are often far more profound than what we see on the screen.

Twilight トワイライト

I don't think we should spend our time comparing these to the original books. I feel the films stay the closest to the books as much as they could yet they made a few changes to please some of the moviegoers, and I liked how they interpreted the books considering that these are teen movies and should have a little cheesiness at times. The choice of actors was simply a great job. Especially the vampires are all fit into their roles perfectly with their good looks and pale skins. They look sometimes very cold, and sometimes very warm letting me enjoy the vampire premise – they never get old. Also, Kristen Stewart（クリステン・スチュワート）was perfect as Bella Swan.

This movie is not just a vampire film but so much more. Very artistic, poetic, and deep depicting the nature of good and evil especially through the world of children where good and evil can coexist side by side yet their purity somehow discerns good and evil occasionally. Also, it shows us how friendship can help us find our own personal strength superbly by the two lonely children (one is a vampire) who meet and change each other's lives.

"Hearafter" delves into not only our lives after death but the lives themselves. Clint Eastwood（クリント・イーストウッド）superbly gave us a look into the peace and mystery that await us, plus the joy and beauty of what is in front of us. It's not a paranormal probe of ghosts, goblins, or spirits at all. The acting is great as well. Cecile De France（セシル・ドゥ・フランス）is stunning as a television reporter who touches her own death and returns. Frankie / George McLaren（フランキー／ジョージ・マクラレン）is good as a twin boy who lost his brother. And Matt Damon（マット・デイモン）'s restrained performance as a lonely man who is able to capture something from beyond this life is a revelation.

Micmacs ミックマック

There are lots of revenge movies with guns out there, but this film is different. Guns are one of its themes yet they are used to describe the story of the lead, Bazil, who is out of work with nowhere to live, finds comfort with a group of charming vagabonds all of whom eventually become his allies in his battle against the arm dealers that killed Bazil's father with their landmine and also shot Bazil with their bullet. Aside from a series of witty and purposeful acts, the movie is also amazing in its beauty with every scene presenting an fascinating array of colors and wonderful creations. Enjoyed the correlation between the real world and animated fantasy-land with the epic, and appreciated Julie Ferrier（ジュリー・フェリエ）'s acrobatic performs.

The current king and queen of romantic comedies, Ashton Kutcher（アシュトン・カッチャー）and Katherine Heigl（キャサリン・ハイグル）had a good chemistry and did great jobs selling the story and making the characters believable and bringing some laughs and clichés. The film includes dead bodies, shooting, martial arts, explosions, wild chase scenes with the secret agents stories, and so on. If you like action-packed comedies with lots of fun surprises, it will be enjoyable.

Most people feel boredom and discomfort at some point in their lives, and when they are alone with their pains and forced to embrace them, their agonies start evolving. And it gets harder to achieve every day for them as tons of things start distracting them from their lives. A Hollywood actor, Johnny Marco played by Stephen Dorff（スティーヴン・ドーフ）, is slowly becoming numb to life, but prevented from realizing it, which is his biggest misfortune. The film depicts a truly believable feeling of a man who realizes something is wrong but lacks in self understanding to get what it really is. The movie is slow pace, quite, and there are scenes with long cuts, and sometimes there is nothing going on for a few minutes, but this approach and direction by Sofia Coppola（ソフィア・コッポラ）were effective in conveying the despair, loneliness and boredom of Jonny Marco.

Amazing Grace アメイジング・グレイス

An inspiring story based on a historical legend, William Wilberforce（ウィリアム・ウィルバーフォース）, a British Member of Parliament. Being elected to Parliament, he lead the fight to ban slavery for several decades during the late 18th century and early 19th century. The film depicts the entrenched economic motives and the political motives for slavery powerfully, and Ioan Gruffudd（ヨアン・グリフィズ）did an excellent job showing the complexity and heroism of Wilberforce, who was strong, religious, idealistic, yet at times naive, romantic, and sick. To enjoy every single minute of the film, never turn away your faces even from some cruel scenes where the captured Africans turned into slave, where the slaves are treated inhumanely and die of starvation, neglect, disease, and filth.

The Yellow Handkerchief イエロー・ハンカチーフ

It tells a touching story of the three, a beautiful girl played by Kristen Stewart（クリステン・スチュワート）, an awkward boy, played by Eddie Redmayne（エディ・レッドメイン）, and a man who's recently released from his sentence in prison, and William Hurt（ウィリアム・ハート) played this man. All of them have their own troubled past and lingering issues, but share one thing in common – "the need to escape". The entire plot is centered about their long car journey while making mistakes, and leads us to one message "the people who forgive you and offer you a second chance are those who love you the most". It's also nice to see Kaori Momoi（桃井かおり）as a motel owner. A good and worthy film just like Yoji Yamada（山田洋次）version.

Life As We Know It かぞくはじめました

It depicts how two people who didn't like each other at first find enough common grounds to raise a child together in a mind-boggling way. There aren't any "How to" scenes here yet all the small incidents and moves seem so true and plausible. The two leads Katherine Heigl（キャサリン・ハイグル）, Josh Duhamel（ジョシュ・デュアメル）and the baby Sophie finely made the script believable.

Personal Effects ラブ・クライム

Written and directed by David Hollander（デヴィッド・ホランダー）, it depicts how the traumatic deaths of people affect those left behind. Kathy Bates（キャシー・ベイツ）plays the mother of twins, Gloria. The girl was brutalized and murdered, and the boy Walter, played by Ashton Kuchter（アシュトン・カッチャー）, left his career as a wrestler to return to the scene of the crime to mourn his sister and to demand the criminals be imprisoned. During their trial, Walter meets Linda, whose alcoholic husband was killed and who is left to support the teenage deaf son Clay. Michelle Pfeiffer（ミシェル・ファイファー）plays Linda, and Spencer Hudson（スペンサー・ハドソン）plays Clay. Each character finds ways to support the others through series of grieving and isolation and is tied together nicely by film's end.

Based on a French play "Potiche" set in the 1970s, this film depicts how a trophy wife, Suzanne Pujol played by Catherine Deneuve（カトリーヌ・ドヌーヴ）, manages the umbrella factory owned by her tyrannical husband Robert, played by Fabrice Luchini（ファブリス・ルキーニ）, after his employees go on strike and take him hostage vividly and colorfully. We can enjoy their retro flavored clothes, design patterns, hair styles, and a mixture of pastel and hot colors including the colorful umbrellas in the film. There is also a side story regarding Suzanne's affair with her ex-boyfriend and local politician, Maurice Babin, played by Gerard Depardieu（ジェラール・ドパルデュー）, whose chemistry with her is smile-inducing as well.

It depicts Leo Tolstoy（レフ・トルストイ）'s struggle to balance fame and wealth though the content of the story is full of love that occurs to each of the different characters concerning mainly the aging Leo Tolstoy, played by Christopher Plummer（クリストファー・プラマー）, his wife, Sofya（ソフィヤ）, played by Helen Mirren（ヘレン・ミレン）, and their young employer, Bulgakov（ワレンチン）, played by James McAvoy（ジェームズ・マカヴォイ）. Bulgakov's conflict due to his devotion to the Tolstoyan doctrine and how his goals and values change as a result of his employment under Tolstoy are described superbly.

This film is a flashy and sexy treat boasting an gorgeous cast including Christina Aguilera（クリスティーナ・アギレラ）in her film debut, Cher（シェール）, Stanley Tucci（スタンリー・トゥッチ）, Kristen Bell（クリステン・ベル）and so on. Its elaborate song and dance numbers enchanted me especially with Christina Aguilera's strong voice which is attractive enough to carry a film. The plot line is easily understood. A small-town girl, Ali, played by Christina Aguilera, ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a burlesque club run by Tess, played by Cher.

Director Todd Phillips（トッド・フィリップス）, known for his "The Hangover ハングオーバー!", comes out with "Due Date". This is an odd couple style of comedy which worked perfectly thanks to the two lead characters and the likable dog. Both Robert Downey Jr（ロバート・ダウニー・Ｊｒ）and Zach Galifianakis（ザック・ガリフィナーキス）, and Sunny the dog did an excellent job. Downey plays a would-be father who is forced to hitch a ride with a troubled idiot played by Galifianakis. Lots of crazy scenarios will entertain you during their cross-country road trip with not only their cruel jokes but also some heart and humor plus their quick and witty dialogues.

True Grit トゥルー・グリット

A remake of "True Grit 勇気ある追跡" in 1969. The '69 version was driven fully by Rooster Cogburn played by John Wayne（ジョン・ウェイン）yet the new version is truly driven by Mattie Ross played by Hailee Steinfeld（ヘイリー・スタインフェルド）. One of the upgrades from the original film was LaBoeuf portrayed by Matt Damon（マット・デイモン）. In the original, Glen Campbell（グレン・キャンベル）played a more cooperative LaBoeuf while Damon is more independent and clashes with Rooster more often but their chemistry is still believable and enjoyable. Loved the headstrong girl, Hailee Steinfeld so much.

"The Tourist" stars Angelina Jolie（アンジェリーナ・ジョリー） and Johnny Depp（ジョニー・デップ）, two of the biggest stars in the world as a remake of a French film "Anthony Zimmer アントニー・ジマー" which starred Sophie Marceau（ソフィー・マルソー） and Yvan Attal（イヴァン・アタル）. It revolves around an American tourist, Frank, played by Johnny Depp, who is visiting Italy to mend a broken heart while a beautiful mistress of a mafia, Elise, played by Angelina Jolie, deliberately crosses Frank's path. This film mixed a comedy into such fun action scenes superbly. It's not a classic main stream super hero movie but has its own storyline which is consistent, and the characters and situations are hilarious. I would like to see Cameron Diaz（キャメロン・ディアス） in 3D next time since I saw its 2D version this time. It's a nice movie if you want to relax and watch an easy entertaining movie.

As he gets involved deeper into the crime, his newly performed life starts to be threatened again. Such a powerful moving biopic that depicts how King George VI overcame his stuttering problem (thanks to the deep friendship between him and his speech therapist) and found his voice to courageously lead his people into the most devastating war. Colin Firth（コリン・ファース）was excellent as King George VI, and his speech therapist, Geoffrey Rush（ジェフリー・ラッシュ）was fantastic as well. Helena Bonham Carter（ヘレナ・ボナム＝カーター）shined as Queen Elizabeth as always, and so did Guy Pearce（ガイ・ピアース）as King Edward who abdicated his throne for an American divorcée. He is having troubles developing his new films, and in his journey to make his next film, he is having marital problems along with mistress problems. He actually has lots of problems. And the most gorgeous feature of this film should be the female cast. His wife, Marion Cotillard（マリオン・コティヤール）, his mistress, Penélope Cruz（ペネロペ・クルス）, his costume designer, Judi Dench（ジュディ・デンチ）, a fashion designer, Kate Hudson（ケイト・ハドソン）, his muse, Nicole Kidman（ニコール・キッドマン）, and his mother, Sophia Loren（ソフィア・ローレン）. They brought emotion and life to the story through their singing and their exquisite moves. All of them perform superbly.

The movie is based on a true story, and true to the science. Its tagline "Don't hope for a miracle. Make one." is perfect for this film. This has been a personal project of Harrison Ford's for years, so let us cheers to him.

I would say "Bullying" depicts the core of bullying problems throughout the world. Anyone could be bullies and victims anywhere in the world. This film made me remember lots of bittersweet memories of my school days since I was also bullied in school as almost every classmate in my class was. With some hardcore images, it succeeds in making the audience rethink the whole concept of their own communities. This subject is more universal than I thought, and it was quite an eye-opener.

Tom Ford（トム・フォード）'s debut as a director was indeed a startling success. I don't really follow the fashion world too closely, but I would say the film's exquisite images and story should touch any audience. It centers on a professor who has difficulty in coping with his everyday life after the sudden death of his beloved partner. We are born single and usually die alone, and "A Single Man" dramatizes our loneliness in a powerful and literally haunting way. Colin Firth（コリン・ファース）'s painful expressions have such a powerful effect that they could haunt you. The chemistry between Colin Firth and Julianne Moore（ジュリアン・ムーア）was superb as well.

A main stream movie dealing with middle-aged romance and showing that it can be as exciting and romantic as with younger people. It was a pleasure seeing Harry = Jack Nicholson（ジャック・ニコルソン）, who is in his sixties, make fun of his own image with Marin Barry, who is in her twenties, and romancing a woman close to her age. Nicholson and Erica = Diane Keaton（ダイアン・キートン） play off each other wonderfully and there scenes are beautifully romantic and sexy—proving. It was very refreshing to see a younger man, Keanu Reeves（キアヌ・リーヴス） madly in love with Keaton. Nancy Meyers（ナンシー・マイヤーズ）uses her writing and directing skills to make an excellent film.

Kinder Film Festival Kyoto キンダー・フィルム・フェスティバル京都

"Iep!" is being screened with my translation at Kinder Film Festival Kyoto (August 5th-7th). The main actress, Kenadie Jourdin-Bromley was diagnosed with primordial dwarfism, a genetic condition that is believed to affect only about 100 people in the world. She is known around the world as "the littlest angel" via mass media. She was also on TV in Japan, a special TV show, "Kagayaku-Inochi" on channel 12 (TV Tokyo), and showed her noble tidy figure and brought us courage and inspiration we need to face difficulties. The original book was written by Joke van Leeuwen, a great author, also an illustrator, known as the representative of Holland. This adorable film was definitely a masterpiece which translated into seven languages and got lots of awards such as "Grand Prix" at Montréal International Children's Film Festival. I sincerely hope you will enjoy it.

I saw this movie mainly because it is based on a book by Nicholas Sparks（ニコラス・スパークス）, who also wrote the wonderful “the Notebook（きみに読む物語）" and his adaptations were usually surprisingly good. "The Last Song" might be OK for some considering that it was a debut in a lot of ways. Julie Anne Robinson（ジュリー・アン・ロビンソン）'s directorial debut for feature films, Nicholas Spark’s writing debut for screenplays, and Miley Cyrus（マイリー・サイラス）'s acting debut as someone other than Hannah Montana. If you can excuse the sometimes cheesy moments and keep your mind open, you can have fun.

Her mother constantly abuses her and she's already pregnant with her second baby. Gabourey Sidibe（ガボレイ・シディベ）definitely deserves the Best Actress Oscar. Her performance was so real that you're just forced to sympathize with her. "All About Steve" is, actually not all about Steve, played by Bradley Cooper（ブラッドリー・クーパー）but rather about Mary played by Sandra Bullock（サンドラ・ブロック）. Mary is full of fun, who has useless facts and interesting vocabulary words. But for all her knowledge and intelligence from books and dictionaries, she lacks in professional and societal decorum. That’s one of the reasons why she thinks it's appropriate to take a trip to find love with Steve. She tries hard to find love and meaning in her life. It's a very smart comedy with insightful commentary into the selfish nature of society and the state of today's news media. I enjoyed its hilarious, intelligent thoughts, and its potential to increase your general knowledge and vocabulary.

The Time Traveler's Wife きみがぼくを見つけた日

It was a complex movie because of the various problems the main character's condition meant and the broken timeline which continues throughout the whole film. So, everyone around the time traveler changes age suddenly, sometimes following everyone else's timeline, and the traveler himself also appears to suddenly become younger. The plot is just about a couple trying to live a normal life given the bizarre condition the husband has. There are a few scenes of comedy, some extremely touching emotional scenes, and some genuine shocks. Both Eric Bana（エリック・バナ）and Rachel McAdams（レイチェル・マクアダムス）played their parts perfectly.

COCO CHANEL ココ・シャネル

Even though this film is a melodrama, it's so well made that we can't but fall for Coco's challenges. We can't imagine how often she was verging on bankruptcy, and how she came out of it with a mixture of audacity, being at the right places, and bedding rich gentlemen. Barbora Bobulova（バルボラ・ボブローヴァ）is stunning as young Cocó. Probably more likable than Audrieu Tatou（オドレイ・トトゥ）. Both are fine, probably "Cocó avant Chanel" emphasizes the sad and grim aspects more while this version indulges into more romance and show us something absent from the feature film. Also in this version we see the origin of the famous perfume N 5 and her famous little black dress. Coco Chanel changed the way women dressed and also introduced a new philosophy of fashion -- women should dress for themselves and not their men, and true fashion comes from the streets. She was a powerful woman from a humble background in a class-conscious society and depended upon alliances with the wealthy to get her where she needed to go. The movie does a very good job and could not have picked anyone better to play the icon than Shirley MacLaine（シャーリー・マクレーン）, who does a fantastic job.

Finding Forrester 小説家を見つけたら

Directed by Gus Van Sant（ガス・ヴァン・サント）, who also directed "Good Will Hunting（グッド・ウィル・ハンティング）" ,these two film have essentially a lot in common. An underprivileged young kid is discovered by a genius and is shepherded to his full potential. Just "Good Will Hunting" was to math, this film is to literature. Regardless of the familiar plot, "Finding Forrester" succeeds because of an excellent screenplay and outstanding acting performances by Sean Connery（ショーン・コネリー）, Rob Brown（ロブ・ブラウン） and F. Murray Abraham（Ｆ・マーレイ・エイブラハム）. This story is uplifting for both of them. Forrester (Sean Connery) helps Jamal (Rob Wallace) realize his potential as a writer, and Jamal helps Forrester heal his emotional traumas to free him as a human being.

Eat Pray Love 食べて、祈って、恋して

I guess most people are seeing this film for Julia Roberts（ジュリア・ロバーツ）and we know Julia Roberts well enough to tell that she would not associate herself with a bad film. She looked stunning, and her own character shone through. The photography was brilliant, the atmospheres of Italy, India and Bali were all brought to life. Anyone who has been unhappy in a marriage and has wished they had the courage to leave it knowing it's the right thing for both parties, will appreciate this film. In that case, there was a satisfyingly good ending, not always so in real life. It will encourage you to be braver and believe that you can find love again, and if not, at least you will know you do not need your own man or woman to find happiness.

Another Thomas McCarthy（トム・マッカーシー）'s gem after his charming "The Station Agent", which hasn't released on DVD in Japan yet, unfortunately. It depicts Walter Vale played by Richard Jenkins（リチャード・ジェンキンス）. A solemn economics teacher, who spends his time pretending to write on his book and learn piano. Walter finds himself in New York on business and runs into two illegal immigrants. Then the story begins. It shows us that all of us can change our lives and those changes are all around us and are indeed welcome.

"Iep!" was released on DVD with my translation in Japan today. The main actress, Kenadie Jourdin-Bromley was diagnosed with primordial dwarfism, a genetic condition that is believed to affect only about 100 people in the world. She is known around the world as "the littlest angel" via mass media. She was also on TV in Japan, a special TV show, "Kagayaku-Inochi" on channel 12 (TV Tokyo), and showed her noble tidy figure and brought us courage and inspiration we need to face difficulties. The original book was written by Joke van Leeuwen, a great author, also an illustrator, known as the representative of Holland. This adorable film was definitely a masterpiece which translated into seven languages and got lots of awards such as "Grand Prix" at Montréal International Children's Film Festival. I sincerely hope you will enjoy it.

Knight and Day ナイト＆デイ

This is a enjoyable one with the perfect combination of action, romance, comedy, adventure, humor, and thriller. The cast was fantastic and so was the overall feel of the film. Cameron Diaz（キャメロン・ディアズ）and Tom Cruise（トム・クルーズ） look great together. They spark on the screen, and the chemistry between the two is nice.

Directed by Clint Eastwood（クリント・イーストウッド）, starred by Morgan Freeman（モーガン・フリーマン） and Matt Damon（マット・デイモン）, this is just a great film. It is the story of Nelson Mandela's first years as President of South Africa in 90's, when the country was culturally separated and having a hard time. Mandela tried to use their love for Rugby to connect the whites and the blacks to unify his people. This film not only captured the themes, but also the poverty of South Africa as well as the intense rugby sequences.
