"My Autistic Friend, Ian" with my translation has been published this week. The author, being a math teacher for 35 years in high school, also a mother of four children and grandmother of seven grandchildren, has written a lot of books for which she has taken advantage of her years of experience as a teacher and her rich experience with her children and grandchildren. This adorable gem highlights the special connection that can be created between children and pets, and the potential contribution of this connection. I sincerely hope both children and adults will enjoy this book both in English and Japanese.
今週、翻訳いたしました『じへいしょうの おともだち イアン』が出版されました。35年間、高校の数学教師として教鞭を取られてきた著者は、4児の母であり、7人の孫にも恵まれる祖母。長年の教師経験や子孫たちとの豊富な体験が活かされた作品が多く、本作は子供たちとペットの間に育まれるかけがえのないつながりに、また、そのつながりがもたらす可能性にハイライトが当てられています。英語と日本語のバイリンガルで子供も大人もお楽しみいただければ幸甚です。

One day I caught the attention of a video depicting the outburst of frustration and rage of a young autistic child. The boy was lying on the floor, crying, screaming and in the background his hands, feet, and head moving uncontrollably. Suddenly, the family cat came up to him and began using his front legs to stroke the child's head and lick him. Within seconds, the child completely relaxed. This video motivated me to examine the impact of pets on autistic children. I discovered a whole world of wonderful relationships between pets and autistic children. Connections that greatly contribute to the development of the autistic child and his ability to socialize with his environment. That was the inspiration for writing this book. It does not purport to represent any real reality, but merely to highlight the special connection that can be created between children and pets and the potential contribution of this connection.

ある日、幼い自閉症の子が不満と怒りを爆発させているところが映し出された映像が私の目にとまりました。その男の子は床の上に寝そべって大声で泣き叫びながら、抑えきれない様子で両手と両足と頭を動かしていました。すると突然一匹の飼い猫が男の子のところまでやってきて、前足で男の子の頭をなではじめ、ペロリとなめたのです。すると、たちまち男の子は落ち着きを取り戻しました。この映像に刺激を受けた私は、ペットが自閉症の子供たちに及ぼす影響について観察してみました。するとペットと自閉症の子供たちの間にはすばらしい関係が存在することが分かったのです。自閉症の子の発達や環境に適合していく能力に非常に役立つ関係性です。そのことがインスピレーションとなり、この本を執筆しました。現実に起こった話ではありませんが、子供たちとペットの間に育まれるかけがえのないつながりに、また、そのつながりがもたらす可能性にハイライトが当てられています。
